3 Itineraries for Your Outer Banks Short Stay

Regular visitors know that, historically, vacation rentals in the Outer Banks are rented on a weekly basis during the summer, checking in on a Saturday or Sunday and checking out the following week. While that works for many travelers, we’ve found that guests are vacationing differently these days. Let’s face it - a lot of things are different these days!

Remote workers have more flexible schedules and might be looking to get out of town on a weekday instead of a weekend. Travelers are also looking for shorter stays, as a weeklong vacation might be over budget, or too difficult to get time off for.

This is why we couldn’t be more excited to launch our “in-season short stays” on a select group of our Outer Banks vacation rentals! New for summer 2025, Outer Banks Blue is offering short stays on peak summer dates, only on a specific group of properties. Visit our Summer Shorts Stays page to learn more, and start planning your visit to the Outer Banks! And check out some of our suggestions below for planning the best 3+ day vacation in the Outer Banks.

1. Enjoy a Family-Friendly Long Weekend in Corolla

Arrive in Corolla on Friday and skip the weekend traffic. Keyless entry and pre-made beds mean all you have to do is unload the car and relax! Order delivery from Corolla Pizza and settle in to your vacation rental for the night.

On Saturday, wake up and get breakfast from Lighthouse Bagels and Deli. Purchase a beach parking permit and spend the day tailgating on the 4x4 beach. If there's still energy to burn, swing through Corolla Adventure Park on the way home. Prepare dinner at your rental, eat on the deck or screened porch as the sun sets, and enjoy a movie in the theater room or living room. The perfect way to end the day!

On Sunday morning, Head to Doppio for a delicious cappuccino before setting off on a Corolla wild horse tourwhich also includes local history and a tour of the town of Carova, an area that is off limits for recreational drivers. Afterwards, grab a North Carolina style BBQ sandwich for lunch at Corolla Village BBQ, then partake in some friendly competition at the Grass Course. In the evening, explore and wander the shops at Timbuck II, which also has plenty of dinner options to satisfy everyone. End the day with a soak in the hot tub at your Corolla rental.

On Monday, pack up and head out with a leisurely drive home, grateful for the quiet non-weekend roads. Try stopping at one of the roadside markets on your way out!

2. Seek Adventure with a Mid-week Trip to Nags Head

The forecast shows great weather, wind, and waves starting Tuesday, so you book a last-minute vacation rental in Nags Head. Now all you have to do is pack your bags, load your board, and fill the gas tank!

Arrive Monday evening and swing by Mulligans for a drink and to see if there's any local intel on the best surf breaks.

Get up at dawn on Tuesday to catch the Outer Banks famous swell. Surf until the steam runs out, then head for tacos at Shaka's Beach Bar and Grill. Take a scenic drive to Oregon inlet to walk the beach and watch the boats come in. Get back just in time to watch the sun set from the deck of your Nags Head rental.

On Wednesday, grab coffee and a breakfast sandwich from Waverider's Deli before finishing up some remote work back at your vacation rental. Celebrate the end of the work day by trying hang gliding from the top of Jockey's Ridge at the largest hang gliding school in the world (Kitty Hawk Kites). Hit Blue Moon for a hearty post-adventure meal and drink. End the day with bowling and some games at the arcade.

For Thursday, catch one last sunrise on the beach before packing your bag and heading home. Don't forget to leave a 5-star review before hitting the road!

Take another walk and follow the sound of music to the Tap Shack, where you can sit back and listen to live music throughout the day and evening. Chase the sun across the street to NC Coast where you can enjoy a waterfront sunset and great food.

Saturday, sleep in without an alarm and then casually explore Scarborough Faire Shopping Village with a coffee and brunch from Treehouse Coffee. Book a spa appointment at The Sanderling and have a relaxing afternoon. Afterwards, rent a bike and explore the many local shops for gifts and souvenirs. End the day by catching another great waterfront sunset with dinner and live music at The Blue Point.

Sunday, get up early to catch the sunrise from your oceanfront vacation rental. You realize there are never enough oceanfront sunrises, so you call and extend your stay in Duck for another night or two, feeling inspired and excited to see what other adventures can be found!
