Wright Brothers Multi-Use Path
Looking for an easy, scenic place to walk, jog, or bike on the Outer Banks? The Wright Brothers Multi-Use Path traces the Kitty Hawk Bay shoreline, continues through Kill Devil Hills with lots of soundside park access points, and finishes by wrapping around the Wright Brothers National Memorial. This half-mile paved path strings together classic Outer Banks views along with history, and smooth pavement - it's a great local resource that allows you to get out in nature and enjoy some exercise!
- Sunset Central: The Kitty Hawk section follows the edge of Kitty Hawk Bay, making it a favorite place to enjoy a golden-hour stroll/ride. The paved path here is short and flat—great for families and casual spins.
- Run/bike friendly: In Kill Devil Hills, the greenway links up with the Bay Drive corridor and other town paths, so you can turn a quick walk into a longer workout without mixing with busy highway traffic.

- History at the Finish: On the south end, paths encircle the Wright Brothers National Memorial area, so you can add a lap by the First Flight airstrip and monument.
- Great for Bird Watching: Various species of birds can be spotted along the path.
Along Bay Drive in Kill Devil Hills you’ll find multiple public sound accesses with piers, gazebos, picnic tables, and calm water for watching birds or launching a kayak. Favorites include Hayman Boulevard Estuarine Access, Moor Shores Canoe/Kayak Launch, and Third Street.
Windgrass Circle Park is a handy spot to start the Kitty Hawk section (free parking).
In Kill Kevil Hills, use the town soundside access lots (signed) along Bay Drive; please observe posted hours.
- Kitty Hawk segment: This 1/2 mile segment goes from Windgrass Circle north/south along the bay.
- Kill Devil Hills connection: From the hill above Windgrass, follow Tateway âžś Bay Drive to pick up the wide multi-use path paralleling the sound, with spurs toward Colington and the Memorial area.
- Build a longer route by continuing the Bay Drive path through KDH (several miles of paved greenway) and looping the Wright Brothers Memorial paths.

- This is a multi-use corridor—yield to pedestrians, keep right, and use a bell/voice when passing.
- Leashed dogs are welcome; please make sure to pack out waste.
- Wind can funnel along the bay; a light layer is smart even in warm months.
- Sunset - the bay lights up during sunset, make sure to bring a camera!
- Mornings are another nice time to use the path, as you can take advantage of fewer people and cooler temps.
