This week's Memory Monday photo submission comes to us from Pamela Butler of Smithville, Pennsylvania who stayed with Outer Banks Bluein June at the property "Moonstruck" on the oceanfront in NagsHead. Instead of photos of the ocean or the kids playing on the beach Pamela has shared with us a very popular location on the Outer Banks that we do not have many pictures of - Jockey's Ridge State Park!
These pictures of Pamela and her family enjoying Jockey's Ridge reminds us of the many, many different activities there are to enjoy here on the Outer Banks. Jockey's ridge state park contains the tallest living sand dune on the east coast. The park covers 426 acres and the tallest point rises more than 100 feet above sea level. Scientists believe Jockey's ridge was created at the end of the last ice age some 12,000 years ago and the park has more than 39 million tons of sand for visitors to enjoy.
The sunsets from the top of the ridge are epic, and the park also is home to the largest hang gliding school in the world (Kitty Hawk Kites).
The Butler clan enjoyed climbing Jockey's ridge before heading over to Manteo on Roanoke Island where they had dinner at Big Al's Soda Fountain and
Grill. That's where the picture of the Butler kids was taken in the
oversized lounge chair.
