Outer Banks Runs & Races


April is an exciting time for runners on the Outer Banks, with two popular races that combine fitness with incredible coastal scenery. The Flying Pirate Half Marathon Weekend brings runners to the northern beaches for a festive race experience that includes a half marathon, 5K, and fun run through Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. Later in the month, the pirate-themed Scallywag Race Weekend takes place on Ocracoke Island, featuring a 5K, 10K, and Blackbeard’s Half Marathon that wind through historic village streets, past Ocracoke Harbor, and near the iconic lighthouse. These scenic spring races offer participants of all skill levels the chance to stay active while enjoying the natural beauty and coastal charm of the OBX.

Kill Devil Hills

The Outer Banks Flying Pirate Half Marathon features 13.1 miles of scenic coastal views, plus a Fun Run, 5K, and 8K. Runners can also tackle the Double Dare Challenge, combining the Half with a shorter race.

April 25th, 2026

Ocracoke

Join the 15th annual Ocracoke Island 5K/10K through historic village streets, past Ocracoke Harbor, and by the island’s lighthouse. All participants receive a medal and shirt, with awards for top finishers, followed by a post-run celebration at 1718 Brewery.

April 26th, 2026
Ocracoke

Run Ocracoke’s 11th Annual Half Marathon along a flat, fast course from 1718 Brewery to Cape Hatteras National Seashore and back through the village. All runners receive a medal and shirt, with awards for top overall and age group finishers.


Corolla Wild Horses Foaling Season


Spring marks foaling season for the Corolla wild horses on the Outer Banks, one of the OBX’s most popular wildlife experiences. From spring through early summer, visitors can see newborn wild Banker foals along the northern beaches, offering a rare opportunity for wildlife viewing, photography, and learning about OBX’s unique coastal ecosystem.

Manteo

Experience First Friday in historic downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island, a family-friendly event held the first Friday of each month from March through November. For April's First Friday, enjoy live music by Suzzie Jacuzzi in The Courtyard, Brad Pivott in The Davis Lot, and Cor de Lux at Magnolia Pavilion, along with local art, food, drinks, magic, and the Manteo Stroll, where galleries, shops, and restaurants host special activities—making it the perfect evening to explore OBX culture and entertainment.

The 8th Annual Lost Colony Wine & Culinary Festival is a must‑attend OBX adults‑only celebration of food, wine, and local flavor.
