Things to do in January on the Outer Banks

While the Outer Banks off-season may not be ideal for sunbathing, it offers a different kind of coastal magic: empty beaches, abundant seashells, great surf conditions, and unique local events and activities. Visiting the Outer Banks in the off-season lets you experience the area at a slower pace and see it through a true local’s perspective.

Empty Beaches

When the winter sun shines on the Outer Banks, a beach walk is a must. Enjoy wide, uncrowded beaches, peaceful surf fishing with little to no competition, coastal treasures washed ashore, and the chance to spot dolphins swimming just offshore.

Snow Days on the Outer Banks

That’s right—the Outer Banks gets snow days… sometimes! When snow does fall and stick, kids turn boogie boards into sleds, old surfboards into snowboards, and decorate snowmen with seashells. It transforms the coast into a rare winter wonderland known as “SnOBX.”

Best Season of Beachcombing

Winter on the Outer Banks brings windy days and nights that push more shells and sea glass onto the shore. The best time for beachcombing is after a windy night, once the wind dies down in the morning, and following peak high tide. These conditions create some of the best beachcombing days of the season.

Polar Plunging & Surfing

While many would say January is too cold for swimming in the ocean, others would disagree. Winter on the Outer Banks brings bigger swells than summer, and on the right day you’ll find surfers taking advantage of the waves. Some visitors even embrace the cold with a polar plunge—most often on New Year’s Day.

New Year's Day Feasts

Start the new year with local Outer Banks flavor. Jolly Roger’s and Mulligan’s Grille host popular New Year’s Day feasts, and many other OBX restaurants remain open for regular service throughout the off-season.

Trivia & Bingo Nights

The Outer Banks off-season brings back local favorites like trivia and bingo nights. Test your knowledge, enjoy a fun night out, and win gift cards to some of your favorite OBX spots.

Every Monday Trivia at Red Drum Grill & Taphouse

Every Wednesday Trivia at Noosa Beach Grille

Every Thursday Trivia at Outer Banks Brewing Station

Live Music

Weekends on the Outer Banks are filled with live music at local restaurants and venues. From DJs and open mic nights to local bands and solo performers, there’s live entertainment to match every taste. See all upcoming performances here.

The Outer Banks Wedding Weekend + Expo is one of January’s biggest events. It’s the perfect place to connect with top OBX wedding vendors, including caterers, musicians, florists, and more.
