Things to do in March on the Outer Banks

March on the Outer Banks marks the beginning of spring along North Carolina’s coast, bringing milder temperatures, longer days, and fewer crowds than the peak summer season. As winter fades, the island comes back to life with blooming landscapes, peaceful beaches, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities.

From warmer weather conditions and the start of peak spring fishing along the surf and piers, to celebrating Women’s History Month through local history and cultural sites, this is a month full of meaningful experiences.

Visitors can enjoy festive St. Patrick’s Day events, savor coastal flavors during the annual Taste of the Beach, and plan the perfect spring break getaway with family or friends. Whether you’re casting a line in Corolla, exploring historic attractions, or attending one of the many March events happening across the Outer Banks, this shoulder-season month offers the perfect balance of relaxation, celebration, and coastal adventure.

Weather & Beach Conditions

With March being the end of winter and beginning of spring, you'll find a mix of sunny days and cold days. The average high temperatures range from 50s-60s and the average low temperature range from 40s-50s. March brings more wind than most months, making it ideal for kite flying on the beach or Jockey's Ridge, kite surfing on the sound or the Atlantic, and breeze along with the sunshine. The water temperatures average around 42-50 degrees, making swimming not ideal, but you will find surfers in the water either way when there are waves!

Women's History Month on the OBX

With March recognized as Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating remarkable women of the Outer Banks—past and present—whose impact continues to shape our community. Pictured above is Carolista Fletcher Baum, an artist, jewelry maker, and passionate environmental advocate who played a pivotal role in saving Jockey’s Ridge State Park. In 1973, after confronting a bulldozer threatening the dunes near her family’s summer home in Nags Head, she sparked a grassroots movement—forming The People to Preserve Jockey’s Ridge, gathering tens of thousands of petition signatures, raising funds, and lobbying state leaders, including Governor James Holshouser. Her determination helped secure state and federal support to protect the dunes, transforming them into the beloved 426-acre park visitors enjoy today.

Below, we’re also highlighting a few women-owned businesses on the Outer Banks that you can support during your vacation.

Before launching Outer Surf, owner Bri Young founded Outer Babes, a free surf club for local middle and high school girls. During the pandemic, the program expanded into Outer Surf, offering lessons for everyone of all ages.

More than teaching the basics, Outer Surf shares the art, style, and culture of surfing while creating a supportive space for women to build confidence in the lineup. Today, it offers lessons and camps for everyone of all ages, and women’s retreats.

Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe

Vicki Basnight is first & foremost an Outer Banks fisherwoman and co-owner of her family’s seafood restaurant. As the daughter of former North Carolina Senator Marc Basnight, she has carved out her own legacy on the water as one of the area’s few female anglers.
