Kill Devil Hills gets its name from the colonial era when shipwrecks were commonplace and many ships carried large supplies of rum. Scavengers would skim the shipwreck and bury the rum they claimed was strong enough to "kill the devil" in the giant sand dunes. Thus the name Kill Devil Hills became popular with the locals. KDH is the largest and oldest community on the outer banks. It has many more restaurants and shops then any other village on the banks, more then likely due to its size. Kill Devil Hill (though it was part of Kitty Hawk at the time) is the location of the Wright Brother's first flight and bears a tribute museum for the two brothers.
The Wright Brothers Memorial: The memorial features a visitor center which houses many exhibits and artifacts from the brothers first successful flight. There is also 60 ft monument perched atop a 90 ft Kill Devil Hill which was stabilized to support the landmark. Built in 1932, at a cost of $213,000, the monument is meant to give visitors a true feeling of the exact conditions that the Wright Brothers experienced more 100 years ago.
The Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during summer months and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily September through May (closed Christmas).
