Things to do in August on the Outer Banks

August on the Outer Banks brings the height of summer energy, where long sunny days, warm ocean waters, and a full calendar of events come together for an unforgettable coastal getaway. From surf competitions and offshore fishing tournaments to local farmers markets, hidden gem adventures, and family-friendly activities, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the OBX before the season winds down. Whether you’re planning a relaxing beach escape or an activity-packed vacation, August is the perfect time to experience it all.

Weather on the Outer Banks in August

August is one of the warmest months on the Outer Banks, making it the perfect time to soak up every last bit of summer. Daytime temperatures typically range from the mid-80s to low 90s, while evenings cool into the comfortable low to mid-70s. The Atlantic Ocean is also at its warmest of the year, with water temperatures averaging around 80–84°F, making swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, and other watersports especially enjoyable.

While August brings plenty of sunshine, it's also common to experience brief afternoon showers or thunderstorms. These passing storms often move through quickly, leaving plenty of time to get back outside and enjoy the beach or explore the many attractions across the Outer Banks. Packing lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket will help you stay comfortable no matter what the day's forecast brings.

If you've already checked the lighthouses, piers, and beaches off your list, August is the perfect time to explore some of the Outer Banks' lesser-known attractions. From peaceful nature preserves and scenic boat tours to unique local experiences, there are plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered beyond the usual tourist stops.

Try kayaking through Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge for a chance to see native wildlife in its natural habitat, or dive into OBX history by exploring offshore shipwreck sites that tell the story of the Graveyard of the Atlantic. For something more active, sandboard down the towering dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, then slow things down with a shaded hike through the maritime forest trails of Nags Head Woods Preserve. Head to Wanchese for an authentic glimpse into a working fishing village, or take a ferry out to Portsmouth Island to explore one of the Outer Banks’ most remote and historic barrier islands. You can also unwind on a Vineyard Voyage, a scenic soundside cruise featuring local wine and unforgettable sunset views.

August also marks the beginning of the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, a time when the Outer Banks typically sees increased tropical activity and changing coastal conditions. While major storms are not a constant, it’s always important for visitors to stay weather-aware and keep an eye on forecasts during late summer travel.

At Outer Banks Blue, we encourage guests to plan ahead and stay informed during hurricane season. When booking a stay, guests also have the option to purchase travel insurance, which can provide added peace of mind and coverage in the event of a mandatory evacuation due to a named storm or other qualifying weather event.

August kicks off one of the most exciting times of year for wave riders—the start of surf competition season on the Outer Banks. As late-summer swells begin to roll in, local beaches come alive with surfers, spectators, and a strong sense of coastal energy that defines the OBX surf culture.

From regional contests to grassroots beach competitions, the Outer Banks offers some of the most consistent and challenging surf conditions on the East Coast. Whether you’re an experienced surfer looking to compete or a visitor hoping to catch a glimpse of the action from the shore, August is a great time to experience the area’s deep-rooted surfing community in full swing.

Big Fishing Tournaments on the Outer Banks

August is prime time for offshore fishing on the Outer Banks, and the excitement peaks with some of the most well-known tournaments of the year. This is when the waters come alive with anglers competing for big catches and bragging rights in one of the East Coast’s most iconic fishing destinations.

One of the most anticipated events is the legendary Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament, held in Manteo, which draws top teams from around the country to compete for billfish like marlin and sailfish. Alongside it, the beloved Alice Kelly Ladies Only Billfish Tournament brings an incredible tradition of competition and community spirit, all in support of local charities and causes.

These tournaments showcase the Outer Banks at its finest—deep-sea sportfishing, lively marinas, and a strong coastal heritage rooted in the water. To learn more about the event schedule and details, visit the official tournament site: Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament.

For guests looking to stay close to the action, one of the best Outer Banks Blue homes for this event is Duck Crossing at Pirate’s Cove, offering convenient access to the marina and tournament festivities.
